Dr. Bilal Philips delivers keynote address at the 5th AZAWON National Conference in Nigeria

The International Open University (IOU) Founder-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bilal Philips delivered a powerful keynote speech at the “Harnessing Islamic Social Finance and Policy Innovation for Inclusive Development in Nigeria” conference conducted by the 5th Association of Zakat and Waqf Operators in Nigeria (AZAWON) on 22 December, 2025.

Prof. Dr. Bilal Philips started by congratulating the organizers for the timely and sustained effort of organizing the current and previous conferences. He drew lessons from the history of Islam on how zakat was used to address socio-economic problems of society. According to him, the institution gives hope to the poor and the needy and ensures completeness and inclusivity.

He equally talked about the institution of waqf which by its sustainability is very impactful in solving critical human needs such as education, health, food security and shelter among others. He added that Nigeria has abundant resources and, by implication, untapped zakat and waqf that can be harnessed to bring positive change in society.

The conference was well attended by over 1000 participants from 20 States of the Federation and over 70 member organizations.

The dignitaries included His Excellency the Executive Governor of Katsina State Dr. Dikko Umar Radda, the representatives of the Governors of Kano and Kaduna States, the Emir of Hadejia who represented His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto Alh. Saad Abubakar, CFR, Mni, the Emir of Tikau and representatives of Emirs of Katsina and Daura respectively.

The conference was organized by AZAWON and hosted by Katsina State Zakat and Waqf Board. Prof. Aliyu Dahiru Muhammad, IOU Head of Department of Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance.
