Admissions Office

The Registrar’s Office at the International Open University (IOU) manages all admissions-related processes for prospective students, ensuring a smooth and efficient entry into the academic community. Our comprehensive admissions criteria are designed to assess applicants based on their academic qualifications and readiness for university studies.

Undergraduate Admissions Criteria

To be considered for admission to an undergraduate program at IOU, prospective students must meet the following criteria:

  1. General Requirements:
    • Applicants must have completed their secondary education (high school) and obtained a certificate equivalent to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) or a high school diploma. This qualification must be ISCED level 3 equivalent.
    • A minimum of 5 credits in major subjects in WASSCE, including English and Mathematics, are required for all BSc programs while for BA, BBA, BEd, 5 credits including English and a pass in Math will be sufficient.

  2. Application Process:
    • Complete the online application form available on the IOU website.
    • Submit certified /attested copies of academic certificates, including high school diploma or equivalent, and transcripts.
    • Provide a copy of a valid identification document (passport or national ID).
  3. Additional Requirements:
    • Some programs may require specific subject qualifications or additional tests, the details are available in each program’s page on the main website of IOU.
    • Students who are not from countries where English is an official language must submit proof of English proficiency, such as an IELTS or TOEFL score, or appear for the English Placement Test at IOU. The details regarding the English requirement is available on the main website.
    • Applicants may be asked to attend an interview or provide supporting documents as part of the selection process for specific programs, the details are also available in the program specific pages.

Postgraduate Admissions Criteria for Master’s Programs

Admission to a postgraduate program at IOU, including Master’s degrees, requires the following criteria:

  1. Academic Qualifications:
    • Applicants must hold a relevant undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA as specified by the program (typically a GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or equivalent).
    • Degree programs must align with the intended Master’s field of study, the specific information can be found in each master’s program’s webpage.
    • Degree programs completed must be equivalent to ISCED level 6 for masters degree admissions.
  2. Application Process:
    • Complete and submit the online application form.
    • Provide certified copies of academic transcripts, degree certificates, and any other supporting documentation such as recommendation letters or a Statement of Purpose.
  3. Additional Criteria:
    • You may submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV) outlining academic and professional experience.
    • Some programs may require additional assessments, such as a research proposal, or interviews.
    • Students who have not completed their bachelor’s degree studies in English medium (where the medium of instruction was English) must submit proof of English proficiency, such as an IELTS or TOEFL score, or appear for the English Placement Test at IOU. This is not required if they have completed prior academic qualifications in English.
  4. Application Deadlines:
    • All applications must be submitted by the specified deadlines, which can be found on the IOU Registration Dates page.

Duration and Registration Plan

A- Revised Programs

I- Masters Programs:

The qualification shall extend over the period as reflected below in accordance with the registration type:

A- For MAIS ( course based, research based), MA ALS (Course based), MEd

B- For MA ALS (Research based) and MSc PIC

* It is mandatory for these streams students to enroll as a Full time student for the Research Methodology course

II- Bridge Diplomas (PGCE)

The qualification shall extend over the period as reflected below in accordance with the registration type:

III- Undergraduate Programs (BA, BSc, BBA, B. Ed., LLB)

The qualification shall extend over the period as reflected below in accordance with the registration type:

IV- Diploma Programs

The qualification shall extend over the period as reflected below in accordance with the registration type:

The qualification shall extend over the period as reflected below in accordance with the registration type:

VI- Non Degree Purpose Programs (BMAIS and BM ALS)

Full-time study permits the student to register for modules totalling a maximum of 60 credits (600 notional hours)per semester.

Part-time study permits the student to register for modules totalling a maximum of 40 credits (400 notional hours) per semester.

Students are required to choose the registration plan after receiving the admission confirmation email. The fee is charged according to the registration plan opted by the students.

All students are advised to choose between a part time or full time registration plan after taking into account other responsibilities. You may, however, request to switch the registration plan from full-time to part-time or vice versa in the event of legitimate circumstances from the Registration Plan Change portal . Please note that the study duration will be recalculated if the change in the registration plan request is approved by the admin.

Note: Should a student be unable to study during a specific semester, then he/she may apply to the Registrar’s Office to place the studies in abeyance for a period not exceeding 12 consecutive months. The abeyance period will not be considered as part of the maximum duration permitted for the completion of the program.

 

B- Pre Spring 2024 Postgraduate Programs

i – Master of Arts in Islamic Studies curr F2015

The qualification shall extend over the period as reflected below in accordance with the registration type:

Accelerated plan allows students to enroll in 7 to 9 courses per semester with exception to BSc PSY curr F2018 where students can enroll in 6 to 7 courses.

Full time study allows students to enroll in 4 to 6 courses per semester with exception to BSc PSY curr F2018 where students can enroll in 4 to 5 courses.

Full time study allows students to enroll in 1 to 3 courses per semester.

Students can choose their registration plan every semester at the time of payment. However students are encouraged to stick to one registration plan to ensure steady progress.

Note: Should a student (enrolled under B to D programs) be unable to study during a specific semester, then he/she may apply to the Registrar’s Office to place the studies in abeyance for a period not exceeding 24 consecutive months. The abeyance period will not be considered as part of the maximum duration permitted for the completion of the program.

Bangladesh
