The International Open University (IOU) had the honor of participating in the National Air Quality Awareness Day, convened by the National Environment Agency (NEA) under the national theme “United for Clean Air in The Gambia” on 13 May 2026.
Representing the Honorable IOU Vice Chancellor, the IOU Director of Operations joined key government institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders in reaffirming a collective commitment to advancing environmental sustainability, strengthening air quality monitoring frameworks, and promoting public health protection. The engagement underscored the urgency of addressing environmental challenges such as open waste burning and uncontrolled emissions, while fostering evidence-based policy dialogue and community awareness.
IOU’s presence at this significant national event reflects its enduring commitment to academic involvement, research-driven engagement, and societal impact. As a knowledge institution, IOU remains strategically positioned to contribute to national and global sustainability agendas through education and collaborative partnerships.
Through such engagements, the University continues to advance its mission, supporting government education agendas, and contributing meaningfully to a cleaner, healthier, higher education and more sustainable future.
