As part of their continuous engagement with key stakeholders in the Nigerian educational space, the International Open University (IOU) Vice Chancellor Prof. Makie Taal and IOU DVC (Academics) Prof. Aliyu Dahiru Mohammed met with the Management of the National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria at the NUC Headquarters in Abuja on 26 August, 2026.

The IOU delegation was warmly welcomed by the NUC Executive Secretary Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, who thanked them for the courtesy visit. He informed them that although there is an existing policy that Distance Learning is not recognized if it is 100 percent online, given the global nature of IOU, the university could still apply for recognition through the Transnational educational window. He promised to support IOU given the fact that the university was offering opportunities for lesser privileged students, working class and women at home to pursue their dreams of higher educational qualifications..

During his speech, the IOU Vice Chancellor explained the purpose of their visit as to get recognition by the NUC and other authorities so that IOU graduates can be able to secure jobs in public and private sector and proceed with higher education as the case may be. The VC elaborated about the history and profile of IOU including full accreditation by the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance ( NAQAA) and listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education database among others. The IOU DVC (Academics) elaborated on the platform IOU uses, the teaching, learning and research components of the University.

The meeting witnessed the attendance of all the directorates and senior management of the NUC.
