The International Open University DVC (Academics) Prof. Aliyu Dahiru Muhammad represented IOU at the 18th Convocation of the University of the Gambia (UTG) that took place at the main campus of the University at Faraba Banta on 2nd May, 2026.

The convocation witnessed the graduation of 1633 graduands in various fields of Sciences and Humanities. During his keynote speech, Special Guest of Honour Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, former President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), encouraged the graduands to be job creators rather than job seekers.

The Chancellor of the University and the President of the Republic of the Gambia His Excellency Mr. Adama Barrow in his speech, gave an account of his transformational leadership in education and other human development sectors including establishment of specialized universities and providing enabling environment for higher education to thrive in the country and beyond.
